I say young fella ,you’re had a bad run I am an ex farmer from Ireland and well used to hard Manual work also a qualified diesel mechanic. I managed farms in Nz in the seventies and was treated brilliantly once lost a tank of milk and farmer said, “no point in crying over lost milk” Easy to work for We moved to Australia permanently in 1990 and my first job in the mining industry brilliant ,good accommodation wages etc After that 4 months working on a sheep and grain farm ,worked hard but could see no future in that if I was going to be able to afford to put my kids through college etc , and after an excellent young fella was fired for no good reason My wife was offered a position in Kalgoorlie and that was home for 30 + years , working in the mining industry . which now enables us to to do what we want a very lucrative retirement Moved from Kalgoorlie to Perth and the wheat belt “ That to an English lad Is the grain growing area “ Now my point is working for farmers As an ex Farmer contractor + Diesel mechanic and as a fit 70 yr old ,young fella one would think that it would be easy to get a part time job in the agricultural industry how wrong was I. The story goes as follows During the Covid Harvest of 2021 when if you remember Western Australia was locked down “ And rightly so “ so I let it be known that I was interested in helping out within a 150 Km of the local area Goomalling Dowering etc and had a job organized and all agreed with the two brothers and was looking forward to helping out , as I hadn’t done a harvest since leaving Ireland used to run our own harvesting equipment , anyway I refused a couple of other offers, and with about a weeks to go got a txt message to tell me not to worry as the position was no longer available ,of course I called up to enquire why , and of course they hadn’t expected that ,it transpired that they had got a local teenager,of course they didn’t tell me that they likely would have to pay him a lot lower hourly rate $$ Sting in their tail was that they were desperately looking for someone mid harvest, the young fella had hightailed it ,of course I was by then doing something else like on holiday in Europe It goes on My second attempt towards agriculture was I heard this Irish bloke who farms at Kojonup having a chat on the local ABC radio ,that he couldn’t get people for harvest due to Covid Harvest 22 ,we had met Briefly when we called to his place on our way past I got in touch with him and agreed to come and help I went there 300 Km at my own expense Well I went there for a few days slept in a swag as it looked to me he already had enough people lived in his house, which I didn’t like as they have 2 Littles but in fairness his wife looked after me and 2 other older blokes ok He already had 3 German lads working there excellent blokes I decided to bring my caravan down as I like my independence etc and that didn’t last too long as I had already informed him that I wasn’t interested in heavy manual work He has short memory, as after 2 days he sent me and another old bloke to do some fencing or rather repair a fence . We spent a full app 7 Hrs working very hard to replace app 200 + Star pickets ( fence Posts)and we thought that we had done a reasonable job in almost fly blown conditions About 4 pm he came by ,we hadn’t seen him all day . He arrived and started to yell at us that we had done too good a job Yes we had used too many fence posts ,etc Remember I said yell and one of his Harvesters was broken down etc I should have videotaped that spat ,and it gets worse I asked him did he not want the sheep fenced in And indeed that really got him to spit the dummy the howling would make a good part in a play Now remember his yard. Had no functioning toilet eating areas actually no facilities at all ,and had a rat poo truck that had no brakes that he expected me to drive, some day’s later a bloke rolled it and lucky escape, should have been killed or badly injured I at that stage decided that enough was enough and packed up my gear and quit there and then But that’s not the end as he had asked me during his tirade how much per hour I was charging him My answer was that if I charged him the mining rate he couldn’t afford me I did end up charging him $40 / Hr and he sent me a bill for food accommodation etc and of course I promptly paid that I don’t think He informed me that he could get the best of Backpacker’s for $25/ HR . Is it any surprise that agriculture can’t get employees as the blokes like yourself have little redress poor conditions pay etc I am sure there is some very nice good farming employers out there I have yet to find one . So I can empathize with your predicament but it’s as I said little wonder that agriculture is working on the back of poor conditions poor wages Etc The verbal or other abuse needs to be stamped out A good book to read on agribusiness abuse etc Far From Home By Rosie Ayliffe , whose daughter died in Queensland Note I am not Anti farming I am Anti abuse of any type , and would hope that any employer would have to have a standard before they are allowing to take on casual employees Than you for your excellent presentation, hope your life is all up from here on G Luk

I feel bad for you being from a background that isn’t used to that sort or labour and behaviour. But they breed them tough up north and I understand you didn’t know that, but doing your 3 months in far North Queensland on banana farms is crazy, you should’ve been looking for cherry picking down south. Hope you okay anyway

It's really dodgy how the Australian government forces you to do farm work for a VISA. That said, as an Australian, my observation is the homeless and unemployed would rather live on the streets than work on a farm. If people can hold up a lollipop or drive UBER for $2,000 per week, who's going to work in a remote farm in 40 degrees temperature and high humidity with NO air conditioning?
